Plainfield

Plainfield Township prides itself on maintaining its "prairie town" community-oriented atmosphere while expanding its employment and residential opportunities. The schools in Plainfield Township are highly rated. The Plainfield Community Consolidated School District encompasses 64 square miles in Will and Kendall counties. More and more young couples with children are moving into the area, and many people who were raised in Plainfield are returning to raise their children.

The Plainfield Township Park District includes 41 parks totaling 640 acres and includes a recreation center, nature areas, picnic sites, athletic fields, an outdoor swimming pool, fishing ponds, canoe launches, outdoor ice skating areas, playgrounds, and much more. The Plainfield Park District consist of Recreation/Administration Center, River Edge Recreation Center, Ottowa Street Pool, Van Horn Woods Dog Park, Skate Park and the Normantown Trails Equestrian Center. This family-oriented community is also home to a YMCA, providing students and children in the area with a place to learn and have fun.

Residents of the Township have access to a variety of religious institutions including more than a dozen denominational and two non-denominational churches. They can also choose from more than 30 clubs and organizations encompassing many different interests.

Thanks to this easily accessible location, by 1960 the Township of Plainfield was growing rapidly and attracting many new residents, businesses and industries. Although it maintained its small-town image, it was slowly transforming from a rural community into a modern suburb of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1976, a new Village Hall and police station were constructed in the Village of Plainfield, and other improvements were made. In 2003 and 2004 a new village hall was built and is located by the newly built Settlers' Park located on Lockport St. west of the river.

In 1990, Plainfield was devastated when a tornado struck the community, resulting in the loss of life and property. Despite the destruction, the community mustered its pride and strength, rebuilding better what it had lost. Faced with the challenges of growth and maintaining forethought for the future community, the Township of Plainfield continues to build upon its rich and proud history.
